PNCPA Process Submittal

Petition on Xayaburi Dam
Your Excellency:

Next week, the governments of Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam will meet to decide whether to build the first dam on the lower Mekong mainstream – the Xayaburi Dam. This dam would devastate the river’s rich fisheries and directly impact millions of people.

The consultants to the Mekong River Commission recommended in the 2010 Strategic Environmental Assessment that no dam should be constructed for 10 years and more study is needed. International scientists from around the also agree that dam on the lower Mekong mainstream would damage the Mekong river’s rich biodiversity.

The Viet Ecology Foundation as an international NGO would like to submit this letter to the Mekong River Commission to urge the Lao government to put the plan to build the Xayaburi dam on hold for 10 years according to the 2010 SEA report.

Sincerely,

Long P. Pham, P.E.
VEF Chairman
