This paper seeks to present the theory of continental drift and the plate
tectonics, helping to explain the presence of volcanoes, earthquake and
the formation of mountains. The earth‘s lithosphere is broken into huge
fragments, called tectonic plates which are not fixed but slowing moving
on top of the mantle of the earth. They may diverge on the ocean floor,
providing space for hot magma from the interior of the earth to emerge
as lava which solidify when they meet cold sea water to form mid -ocean
ridges. They may collide, with one plate pushed underneath the other,
provoking earthquake and volcanoes. Plate tectonics help explaining why
earthquakes are present in specific zones, namely along the ring of fire
along Pacific ocean and countries around Mediterranean sea.
